Simple Celebrations

February 4th 2025

When we think of Valentine’s Day, what comes to mind? Probably candy for kids and steak and flowers for adults. These are a great start, but this year when we’re spending more time at home is also a great time to create new traditions to celebrate as a family.

Try one of these fun ideas for a celebration that includes all of your loved ones:

Homecooked progressive dinner

Make a meal that is a mix-up of all the family’s favorites. Try writing one course or part of a meal down for each family member (or for larger families, this may spread across multiple meals). Have each person draw one course and select what to make for that part of the meal as you build your holiday menu.

Mystery basket meal

Select one family member to be a judge and select mystery ingredients for a snack or dessert. Each other family member makes something out of the ingredients, and the judge picks their favorite. Giving the winner a homemade trophy and having them serve as next year’s judge will make this a fun tradition for years to come.

Tip: Use our Kids in the Kitchen guide to help pick ingredients that fit skill levels for all family members.

Homemade valentine cards

Have the kids make valentines for each family member using crafting supplies and “found” materials around the home. These will make great momentos and can easily be scrapbooked once your kids outgrow this tradition.

Explore red and pink foods

It can be hard to get kids to try new things, but making a fun game of trying new things can make this scary experience a fun family activity. On your next Price Chopper run, let each family member pick one new red or pink food to try. Have every one taste test your new finds together and talk about what they do and don’t like.
